Thor rules with US$83 million


The God of Thunder Thor reigned around the world this weekend, taking the top spot with US$83 million (RM245.97 million) in 56 markets–the year’s biggest box office opening so far,per The Hollywood Reporter.

The Marvel superhero action film,starring Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek) in the title role and Oscar winners Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins,debuted in first place in the UK,Ireland, France,South Korea,Italy,Spain,Taiwan,Singapore,the Philippines and other markets.

Directed by actor Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet),better-known for his Shakespeare productions,the film opens in North America next weekend and on July 1 in Japan.

In second,Fast Five dropped from second place to collect a robust US$45.3 million,expanding into 14 more territories.

The car action adventure starring Vin Diesel,Dwayne Johnson and Paul Walker,reached the top spot in Russia,Germany,Austria and Turkey.It stayed in first in Australia for the second week.

The fifth film in the series rolls out around the world next weekend in 45 more countries, including China,Italy, Mexico and France.It debuts in Japan in October.In North America, Fast Five opened at US$83.6 million.

After three weeks,the animated bird tale Rio slipped from the top slot to third,with US$31.7 million in 67 markets,but remained perched at second place in France,Brazil and Mexico.

The international total for the family-friendly film is US$263 million,more than twice the North American total.

In the fourth slot,Russell Brand’s Hop gained US$5.7 million in 53 territories.The Easter bunny story blending animation with live action opens in a few countries this summer,including France on July 6 and Japan on August 19.

Fifth is Water for Elephants starring Reese Witherspoon,Christoph Waltz and Twilight’s Robert Pattinson.It earned US$4.7 million this weekend in 23 markets.

Other films performing well include the thriller Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal with US$4.5 million,and Just Go With It,a comedy starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston,which made US$2.2 million in 54 markets to pass a total of US$100 million.
