More than 24 million Brits tune in for royal wedding
More than 24 million viewers in Britain watched the royal wedding on terrestrial television, according to early estimates from the BBC today.
The broadcaster, which provided the official feed for the marriage of Prince William and Kate yesterday, said 24.5 million watched the event on BBC channels and ITV,which made up more than 99 per cent of the terrestrial TV audience.
The estimate puts the wedding in the top 10 of programmes ever watched in Britain, although more people watched England’s victorious 1966 World Cup final and the funeral of William’s mother Diana in 1997.
The current population of Britain is about 62 million.
Government ministers had estimated that two billion people would watch the wedding on television worldwide.
Record numbers of people also watched it streamed live on the Internet, and the interest caused trouble for the BBC website, which flashed up error messages during the ceremony saying it was experiencing “abnormal traffic”.
