Russian scientists expect to meet aliens by 2031
Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilisations within the next two decades, a top Russian astronomer predicted yesterday.
“The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms... Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years,” Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Applied Astronomy Institute, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
Speaking at an international forum dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, Finkelstein said 10 per cent of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth.
If water can be found there, then so can life, he said, adding that aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head.
“They may have different colour skin, but even we have that,” he said.
Finkelstein’s institute runs a program launched in the 1960s at the height of the Cold War space race to watch for and beam out radio signals to outer space.
“The whole time we have been searching for extraterrestrial civilisations, we have mainly been waiting for messages from space and not the other way,” he said

Mati hidup balik, mati semula
Fagili berhasrat menyaman hospital berkenaan.
“Saya sungguh marah dan mahukan jawapan. Isteri saya ketika kali pertama dibawa ke hospital tidak mati tetapi mereka berkata dia mati.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei menang terbuka Indonesia
Malaysian badminton world number one Lee Chong Wei tamed familiar opponent Peter Gade of Denmark in a lop-sided final to complete a title hat-trick at the Indonesia Open today.
The 28-year-old Lee beat Gade 21-11 21-7 in just over half an hour to become the third player — following the Indonesian duo of Ardy Wiranata and Taufik Hidayat — to win three successive men’s singles titles.
Lee had beaten the 34-year-old Gade in the India Open final in May.
India’s Saina Nehwal fought hard for more than an hour in the women’s singles final before losing 21-12 21-23 14-21 to China’s Wang Yihan.
“I feel lucky to have won here in Indonesia. It was a tiring tournament and today’s match was very difficult,” said the Chinese former world number one who now has beaten Saina in all their three encounters.

Transformers’ premiere to be held in Moscow
(Left-right) Cast members Tyrese Gibson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel and director Michael Bay pose at a news conference before the premiere of “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” in Moscow on June 23, 2011.\
Russian film-goers will be the first to see the third sequel of the Transformers saga, which premieres in Moscow yesterday, as Hollywood increasingly turns its attention to audiences in emerging markets.
Stars from the US$200-million (RM606 million), 3D blockbuster “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” will grace the red carpet at the 33rd Moscow International Film Festival — a rare world premiere in the Russian capital, which is increasingly beating Western rivals for the honour of hosting such openings.
“I’m really proud we are doing a premiere here: I think it’s a wonderful world stage,” director Michael Bay told reporters in Moscow, where a crowd of fans waiting for autographs outside one of the city’s main hotels attested to the Russian film audience’s growing appetite for Hollywood movies.
“Moscow is an emerging market, it plays a very important international role in terms of film,” Bay said.
Russian box offices hit record earnings of US$1 billion last year riding the success of foreign blockbusters, which raked in 1.5 times more than Russian movies, according to the independent industry tracker Movie Research.
“When a large American company offers us a world premiere... and brings 80 Hollywood representatives, we can’t refuse, we have no right to refuse because it’s another sign of hope” for the Russian film industry, film-maker Nikita Mikhailkov told journalists.
However, he cautioned that the Russian movie industry was losing film goers to Hollywood blockbusters:
“Most new releases in our market are American, which benefits the US distributors and producers. This is a nearly 120-million-member audience: It’s a large market,” he said.
As the weakening dollar increasingly pushes Hollywood to look to emerging markets for profits, Bay said he planned to take the movie to Brazil and China following its Russian launch.
But he said his decision to open "Transformers" in Moscow was influenced by his own Russian roots.
“I grew up during the Cold War. My grandfather, who is from Russia, said I would never make it into the film business... That’s partly why I’m here,” Bay said, flashing a smile.
Transformers’ star Shia LaBoeuf touted “Dark of the Moon” — whose action plays out against the backdrop of the US-Russian space race — as the best yet in the saga.
“The third movie is the best one. It’s the strongest script we’ve ever had, it’s the best character development, it’s paced well, it’s shot incredibly,” LaBoeuf, who starred in all three movies, told Reuters.
“Technologically, it’s the most advanced, just the best special effects we’ve ever devised!”.

Prestasi buruk, 152,000 pelajar dihenti pinjaman PTPTN

Concorde’s successor revealed at Paris Air Show
International aviation group EADS has revealed a concept for a Concorde replacement which could allow travel between Paris and Tokyo within three hours.
The Zero Emission Hyper Sonic Transport (ZEHST) concept (picture), unveiled ahead of the Paris Air Show this week, uses rocket power to transport passengers above the Earth’s atmosphere, dramatically cutting flight times.
It is powered by three engine types which would allow it to take off as a normal plane using jet engines, before using rockets to shoot into the outer atmosphere and supersonic “ramjets” when it reaches its cruising altitude, at around 32km.
Passenger jets today travel at an altitude of some 11km, some 36,000 feet.
With such a high altitude, the aircraft’s ground speed would be more than twice that of the now-defunct Concorde, speeding around the planet at Mach 4 – four times the speed of sound, or around 5,000km/h.
All of the propulsion methods would be green, with the jet engines using biofuels and the rockets using liquid hydrogen and oxygen – according to EADS, all of this technology is in place, although an unmanned prototype is unlikely to appear before 2020.
The final product could be in the skies by 2050, EADS predicts, and although it’s anyone’s guess as to what Concorde’s successor will look like when it is finally produced, the group is reported to believe that the design of the 1960s aircraft remains a strong base.
Boeing, the US rival of EADS-owned Airbus, is also planning a hypersonic jet.
The Paris Air Show runs through June 26 in Paris.

“Mengisi borang seperti kawalan kastam juga menjadi masalah.”
Meskipun buta huruf, Panayiotou kini memiliki tiga pesawat, satu daripadanya jet Gulfstream berharga £40 juta (RM200 juta), dan sebuah kapal layar berharga £12 juta (RM60 juta).

Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano
A brown ash plume from the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano chain in south-central Chile rises above the clouds in this natural-colour image captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiomter on the Aqua satellite taken shortly after an eruption began on June 4, 2011. The volcano, dormant for decades, belched ash over 10km into the sky, as winds fanned it towards neighbouring Argentina, and prompted the government to evacuate several thousand residents.

Japan theme park to launch record-breaking ride
A Japanese theme park is about to launch a roller coaster with the world’s steepest vertical drop.
The Takabisha ride is scheduled to open at the Fuji-Q Highland Amusement Park near the base of Mount Fuji in Yamanashi prefecture on July 16.
It will feature seven major twists over its 1,000-metre length, a sharp rise to a peak of 43 metres – which triggers a moment of weightlessness before riders take what the operator of the ride describes as “a nosedive” – and sections that plunge riders into complete darkness.
The part of the ride that is ground-breaking, however, is the breakneck freefall at 121 degrees. The park has applied to the Guinness Book of World Records to have the ride certified as the steepest in the world.
Thanks to the assistance of linear motors on the cars – as well as the effects of gravity – riders on the Y3 billion (RM112.94 million) attraction will reach a speed of 100kph and the ride will last for just 112 seconds.
Once the ride has been certified, it will be the 14th Guinness World Record set by Fuji-Q. The park is already home to the Fujiyama ride, Dodompa and Eejanaika, putting the park among the leading venues in the world for thrill-seekers.
